Going west there are no further locks for another 13 miles until you reach Hawkesbury Junction (branching south for Coventry or north for further cruising towards Birmingham, Ashby or Staffordshire).
Going east there are three single width locks at Hillmorton in about a mile; then a 5.5 mile stretch with no locks to Braunston Junction where there is an choice of going either east through 6 double width locks and a 2000 yard tunnel to Norton Junction (branching towards Leicester or London), or south for 5 miles with no locks to Napton Junction where there is a choice of branching west towards Warwick and Birmingham (double width locks) or south to Banbury and Oxford (single width locks).
Novice hirers are advised to gain experience on single width locks.
The Warwickshire ring through Birmingham takes about a week of all day energetic cruising.
The Nicholson Waterways Guide 3 published by Collins is recommended and gives distances, locks, turning places and other information. Waterways Guide 1 will be needed to cover the Oxford Canal south of Napton Junction. It can take several hours between turning places so good planning is necessary.
